There are numerous reasons why you may need braces.  For some people, it may be easy to tell when there is a need to use braces but for others, the reason why braces will be essential is not obvious.

Here are some of the reasons why an orthodontist may recommend braces:

If your bottom teeth overlap the top teeth

This is referred to as an underbite. The dentist will recommend braces so that the jaws can be aligned if the issue is extreme.

If your top teeth overlap the bottom teeth

This is known as overbite and if it is too severe, your dentist will recommend the use of braces. If this is not corrected, it will lead to premature wearing of the teeth.

If your top teeth protrude out over your lower teeth

This condition is referred to as an overjet. If your upper teeth protrude too much compared to the lower teeth, your dentist will recommend the use of braces.

At times the braces may be combined with rubber bands. If this too does not help, your dentist will recommend surgery to align your jaws or your teeth.

If your teeth are crooked

This may be caused by a delay in the falling off of your baby teeth or inadequate space for all your adult teeth. To correct this, your dentist will recommend the use of braces so that the teeth can be realigned.

If you fail to do this, you may have a difficult time trying to clean your teeth, leading to cavities.

Difficulty in chewing

A dental misalignment may make it impossible to chew your food comfortably. This will be characterized by frequent biting of your inner chicks or even your tongue.

Your dentist will use braces to align your feet so that you will be able to chew normally.

If your teeth do not meet on every side

This is referred to as a crossbite and will lead to an uneven wearing off of the teeth if not treated. The dentist will recommend the use of braces so that all your teeth will be on the same level.
